MARIBELLE WAS SURPRISED to find Lanny Jackson waiting for her in the living room when she got back to the estate. “Where’s Harrison?” she asked, looking around for her husband.

“He’s still at work.”

The man looked nervous. Had Harrison told him what she’d said about his bodyguard skills? Did she care? “Here.” She thrust the box with the gun inside at him. “Get rid of it.”

He started to open the box, but her words stopped him.

“You know what’s inside. Just make sure it never turns up,” she said and handed him a scrap of paper. “You’ll need this.”

He looked down at the address she’d written down for him and frowned. “What am I supposed to—”

“You’ll know what you’re supposed to do when you get there. Get rid of the body, and not a word to my husband or you’ll be next.”

Lanny looked as if he might balk. Or worse—go to Harrison.

She reached into her shoulder bag, glad she hadn’t given the money to Judy. She pulled out half of the cash. If Lanny wanted more, she’d have it ready. If he dared. She thrust the bills at him as her cell phone rang. Waving him away, she turned and started for the stairs, leaving him standing in the foyer staring after her. “Oh, and if you tell my husband, I’ll have your eyeballs cut out before I kill you.” She glanced back and smiled. The scary thing was he smiled back.

She dismissed him from her mind as she took her husband’s call.

“Where have you been?” Harrison demanded.

“Out. Is this about Ansley? Maybe you should talk to your lawyer—you know, be ready. You’ll need to buy us a compassionate judge—”

“We don’t have enough money to buy a judge for this, Maribelle,” he snapped impatiently.

“I’m sure a lawyer will be able to advise us. Maybe I’ll call the one that Charlotte Dryer got for her son.”

“Please, let me handle it,” he said. “I was afraid when I couldn’t reach you and Lanny said you weren’t home that you might have taken things into your own hands, as you often do.”

“I don’t want to argue. Could you ask around about sympathetic judges?”

“Maribelle.” He apologized for raising his voice. “Please, just trust me.”

“In other words, you’re going to wait to see what happens. Honestly, Harrison, if this gets out and I’m ostracized by all of our friends, I’ll never forgive you. Do you hear me?”

“All our friends?” he said with a sigh. “Who all would that be? We don’t have any real friends, Maribelle.”

“What are you talking about?” she demanded as she reached the second-floor landing and stopped to catch her breath.

“Nothing. I’m just saying, let me handle it. I’ve gotten us this far, haven’t I?” Silence then, “Mari?”

He hadn’t called her that in years. She felt herself soften. “What?” For a moment, she thought he was going to say that he loved her. Did he still love her?

On the other end of the call, she heard him say, “I have to go. I’m taking care of everything.
